DETOUR® is a professional-grade, environmentally friendly, and budget-conscious solution to effectively deter problem rats and mice. Unlike traditional rodenticides that use poison, DETOUR® uses pure capsaicin — the active compound in hot peppers — to create a sensory deterrent that drives rodents away without harming them or creating toxic hazards. It is NSF-certified (Category H2), EPA FIFRA 25(b) exempt, and approved for use in food processing areas.

DETOUR® works through capsaicin’s interaction with the TRPV1 receptor in mammals. When a rodent contacts the gel, the capsaicin triggers intense burning sensations in their mouth, nose, and paws. This creates an immediate aversion response and a learned behavioral barrier — rodents will avoid treated areas and communicate the danger to others in their colony. The effect is powerful, immediate, and long-lasting.

DETOUR® is classified as a non-toxicant and contains no poisons, pesticides, or harmful chemicals. The active ingredient capsaicin is Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS) by the FDA. However, direct contact with skin or eyes can cause temporary irritation. We recommend wearing gloves during application and washing hands thoroughly afterward. Keep pets and children away from freshly applied gel until dry to the touch.

DETOUR® remains effective for 6–12 months under normal conditions. Indoor applications typically last toward the upper end of that range. Outdoor, high-traffic, or extreme climate areas may require more frequent reapplication. The non-drying polybutene gel base maintains capsaicin potency throughout the protection period. Inspect treated areas every 6 months and reapply when the bead shows significant wear.
DETOUR® can be deployed virtually anywhere rats and mice are a problem: residential homes, commercial buildings, restaurants, food processing facilities, warehouses, agricultural operations, vehicles (engine bays), utility infrastructure, marine environments, and more. Nine specific application methods are documented — General Application, Vinyl Tile, Pipe Tunnel, Two Tray Method, Four Tray Method, Car Engine Method I & II, Rodent Control Protocol, and PCO General Protocol. Visit our Applications page for detailed field guides.
Yes. DETOUR® can be used in conjunction with traps and other pest management tools as part of an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) program. The gel creates a directional barrier that channels rodents toward trap locations, increasing trap efficacy. Many professional PCOs use DETOUR® alongside traps for a comprehensive, non-toxic rodent management approach.

No. DETOUR® is a humane deterrent. Capsaicin causes temporary sensory irritation — an intense burning sensation — but causes no lasting physical harm to rodents. There are no rodent corpses to deal with, no secondary poisoning risk to pets, predatory birds, or other wildlife that may consume rodents, and no inhumane death. Rodents simply learn to avoid treated areas.

Yes. While formulated specifically for rats and mice, DETOUR® has demonstrated effectiveness against other rodents including squirrels and chipmunks. The company also produces PIGNX® Bird Repellent Gel — a companion product for pigeon and bird deterrence. Note: birds lack the capsaicin-sensitive TRPV1 receptor variant, so DETOUR® Rat Repellent Gel is not effective against birds — use PIGNX® for bird applications.

Wear disposable gloves to avoid skin contact. Avoid touching eyes or face during application. Keep children and pets away from the area during and immediately after application. Apply in well-ventilated areas when working in enclosed spaces. Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water after use. If gel contacts eyes, rinse immediately with water for 15 minutes and seek medical attention if irritation persists. Store unused product in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.

For maximum effectiveness: (1) Clean application surfaces to remove grease, dust, or moisture before applying — this maximizes adhesion. (2) Apply a continuous, unbroken bead — gaps allow rodents to pass without contact. (3) Target all active rodent pathways and entry points, not just one or two. (4) Combine with habitat modification — eliminate food sources and nesting materials. (5) Inspect and reapply every 6–12 months. (6) For active infestations, consider combining with traps initially, then transitioning to DETOUR® as the primary long-term barrier.
